LWW open access cap reached – APCs now apply
The national open access quota for Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW) has now been fully used. This means that researchers affiliated with Dutch universities and other institutions participating in the national Read & Publish agreement can no longer publish open access free of charge in LWW journals under this deal.
From this point onward, article processing charges (APCs) will apply to any new articles accepted by LWW journals.
What does this mean for authors?
- If your article was accepted before the cap was reached, it will still be published open access without cost.
- If your article is accepted after the cap date, LWW will send an invoice for the APC.
- Even if the manuscript was submitted earlier, what counts is the acceptance date.
What are your options now?
- Pay the APC using research funds or institutional support (if available).
- Use the Taverne Amendment: six months after publication, you may make the accepted manuscript openly available via your institutional repository.
- Consider publishing in a diamond open access journal (which does not charge APCs).
- Apply the Rights Retention Strategy when submitting to other journals.
