In the spotlight

About

The Expertise Centre Diamond Open Access has created this online portfolio to complement the Online Portfolio created by NWO and Open Science NL, in collaboration with the Expertise Centre for Open Access Week 2024.

Here you will find various contributions about Diamond Open Access—opinion pieces, articles, and interviews, among others.

We are launching this Online Portfolio with an interview with Dr. Hilde van Wijngaarden, Library Director at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Chair of the Executive Board of the UKB, and and Board Member of SCOSS.

Why equitable access matters

With the 2026 theme of the International Open Access Week The Cost of Knowledge we highlight an article on the publishing costs in the Netherlands next to personal stories of scientists and why they have chosen to advocate for equitable and community driven publishing or diamond open access.

How my book being sold to Routledge turned me to Diamond Open Access

“Routledge might still sound prestigious and important in the Humanities field but in reality makes big profits on our free labour.”

How I gradually got involved in Diamond open access.

“Commercial publishers realise the highest profit margins, using scientists' free labour, and are funded by public money. This turned me against commercial publishers and for open access a long time ago”.

Knowledge by and for the scholarly community

“When you start looking around, you see just how much needs to be done, but also you see how much power we can take back together as the academic community.”

Open access beyond privilege

“It didn’t seem fair to me that just because I was now at a richer university, my life was much easier than that of my Romanian colleagues.”

How copyrights and paywalls negatively affect my teaching

“I teach at one of the most prestigious university programmes in geosciences in Europe, and yet I cannot afford to use up-to-date research in my teaching materials”.
