Open Research Europe now available to researchers in the Netherlands
Since 2 November 2026, researchers affiliated with Dutch research institutions have been able to publish free of charge through Open Research Europe (ORE). Originally established by the European Commission for EU-funded research, the open access publishing platform is now available to a much broader research community.

Open access publishing without fees
Researchers affiliated with Dutch research organisations eligible to receive NWO funding can publish through ORE. An NWO grant is not required. International research teams are also eligible, provided at least one author meets the platform's eligibility criteria.
ORE does not charge Article Processing Charges (APCs) or other author-facing publication fees. Instead, publication costs are collectively covered by participating research funders and organisations.
Transparent publishing and peer review
ORE supports a broad range of research outputs, including research articles, methods papers, study protocols, data papers and replication studies. Negative and null results are also welcome.
The platform follows the Publish–Review–Curate (PRC) model. Following pre-publication checks covering areas such as research ethics, integrity and publishing standards, articles are published and assigned a DOI. Open peer review then takes place, with reviewer identities and reports made publicly available. Revised versions remain accessible and independently citable.
A shared European publishing infrastructure
ORE was established by the European Commission in 2021. In its new phase, the platform is collectively supported by research funders and organisations from eleven European countries, including the Netherlands through NWO. CERN is responsible for its technical and operational management.
ORE therefore offers a publicly funded alternative to commercial publishing models, emphasising transparency, accessibility and the quality of individual research contributions.
