Springer publication limit for 2025 reached

Springer Open Access Quota for 2025 Reached

On Thursday, 23 October, the maximum number of open access articles that can be published under the Springer agreement for 2025 was reached.

If a already submitted manuscript is accepted between now and 1 January 2026, Springer can still publish it open access, but the publication costs (APC) will no longer be covered by the consortium. Researchers will receive the invoice directly if open access is chosen during this period.

Alternatively, researchers can make their article open access after a 6-month embargo under Article 25fa of the Dutch Copyright Act (the Taverne Amendment). In this case, the article is first published behind Springer’s paywall and then made openly available through at their institution’s repository after six months, in coordination with their university library. The exact procedure may differ between universities and UMCs.

If you have any questions, or need further information, please contact your university’s open access support team.
