[Update] Upcoming caps on open access publishing deals: Springer, Oxford University Press, and American Chemical Society
Based on current publishing trends, the Open Access (OA) publication caps for the following agreements are expected to be reached soon:
- Springer: Last week of October
- Oxford University Press (OUP):
- Full OA journals: First week of November
- Hybrid journals: November 1
- American Chemical Society (ACS): Around November 1
If authors plan to submit to journals from any of these publishers, we recommend reviewing their publication strategy in advance and take these dates into consideration. If articles have already been submitted, authors should consider the following:
- Before the cap is reached: If the article is accepted before the cap is reached, it will still be published OA at no cost to authors under the existing agreements
- After the cap is reached: If the article is accepted after the cap has been met, the publisher may still offer OA publishing, but the Article Processing Charges (APCs) will no longer be covered. In that case, the cost would need to be paid by the author
If you do not have access to funding for APCs, the recommended alternative is to publish under closed access and use the Taverne Amendment. This allows you to deposit your article in your institutional repository and make it publicly available after a six-month embargo period. Note that the Taverne procedure may vary by university or University Medical Center, so it’s best to check locally for details.
Important: The Taverne route does not meet the OA requirements of funders affiliated with Plan S (e.g. NWO, ERC). If your work is funded by such an organization, please contact your university library for advice on how to proceed. The same applies to full OA journals
You can also contact your university library with any questions about the Taverne procedure, publisher deals, or publication strategy in general
