Publishing beyond the market
This talk will outline the argument in Samuel A. Moore's new book Publishing Beyond the Market: Open Access, Care, and the Commons (University of Michigan Press, 2025). The book explores the evolution of the open access landscape looking at commercial models, governmental policies and radical scholar-led publishing experiments, arguing that the move to open access should focus less on the free accessibility of research outputs and more on who controls the publications and infrastructures for scholarly communication. The talk will situate these ideas within debates on the commons and will argue for a route forward that nurtures an alternative, scholar-led open access landscape.
